About this role

The Psychiatric Midlevel Practitioner functions within the Mental Health Outpatient Department to provide behavioral health assessment and treatment. Works in close collaboration with the Psychiatrist, medical providers, and behavioral health team. Maintains an independent caseload and assists other mental health providers in clinical treatment of patients.

Provides a wide range of mental health treatments including medication management. Serves as liaison between behavioral health and medical care to ensure effective communication and continuity of care. Handles difficult clinical decisions regarding complex and critical patient care issues under potentially stressful conditions.

Serves clients with persistent and chronic mental illness, involving interventions for client and community safety. Operates largely independently with consultation from the behavioral health team, particularly in crisis situations. Demonstrates respect and care within a framework of culturally competent communication.

Maintains complete and accurate records including Intake Assessment, Treatment Planning, Progress Notes, and Discharge Summary for Medicaid compliance and accreditation. Requirements

  • Graduation from a Nurse Practitioner (NP) Program
  • Current full, unrestricted Registered Nursing license in Alaska or other U.S. state
  • National certification as Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
  • Licensed in state of Alaska or obtain license within 6 months of employment
  • Ability to maintain complete and accurate clinical records meeting QA/QI and Medicaid compliance criteria
  • Demonstrate culturally competent communication in behavioral health assessments and treatment

Responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload of patients within an interdisciplinary team model with psychiatric and substance use disorders, medical conditions, and psychosocial stressors
  • Perform medical and psychosocial assessments, patient and family education, and disposition planning
  • Coordinate referrals to other facility services and community agencies
  • Provide mental health evaluations, problem-based counseling, medication management, and other appropriate treatment in outpatient setting
  • Provide hospital, clinic, and village-based mental health assessment and consultation
  • Act as liaison to SEARHC clinic and hospital medical staff to ensure continuity of care
  • Participate in medical staff functions, peer review, patient care conferences, quality assurance, and relevant meetings
