About this role
Northwestern Medicine offers an exciting opportunity for a Physician Assistant or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner in the Behavioral Health/Psychiatry department. The APP supports the addictions and behavioral health team across the full continuum of care, averaging 15 patients per week. Responsibilities span residential, PHP, IOP, ambulatory clinic visits, and limited inpatient coverage including patient intake assessments.
The schedule is Monday-Friday, 1st shift, with the majority of patient care provided in person and remote visits available when clinically appropriate. Rotating weekend call occurs approximately one weekend per month from Friday 5:00 pm through Monday 7:00 am. Call duties include responding to new consults, addressing clinical questions, and rounding on patients as needed, with call pay provided.
The role involves conferring with collaborating physicians and other health professionals in areas of clinical expertise. The APP demonstrates clinical expertise through diagnosis and management of a wide range of health problems while being responsible for health outcomes of an assigned patient population. Acts as a consultant to other disciplines and mentors graduate students in advanced practice.

Requirements
- Licensed as Physician Assistant or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
- Demonstrates clinical expertise and expanded knowledge through patient care activities including diagnosis and management
- Eligible for clinical privileges to prescribe medications, therapies, and order diagnostic tests
- Ability to confer with collaborating physician and other health professionals
- Experience supporting addictions and behavioral health continuum of care
- Certification and continuing education maintained for licensure and privileging
- Integrates research-based knowledge and clinical expertise in decision making
Responsibilities
- Conducts comprehensive appraisals of patients' health status by taking health histories and performing physical examinations
- Provides direct clinical care to patients across residential, PHP, IOP, ambulatory clinic, and limited inpatient settings
- Prescribes/orders medications, therapies; orders/interprets laboratory tests, x-rays and procedures according to clinical privileges
- Evaluates patients to determine their need for further health care
- Provides comprehensive teaching to patients and families
- Documents in the medical record all care and education provided and/or procedures performed
- Refers to other disciplines as appropriate and serves as consultant in areas of expertise
- Participates in patient intake assessments and responds to consults during rotating call
