Emergency Department RNs provide coordinated, compassionate, cost-effective care with a dedicated staff of over 160 physicians and 1,600 employees.
Under the department nurse leader's supervision, the role involves prescribing, delegating, evaluating, and coordinating comprehensive professional nursing care for designated patients. This includes maintaining standards per Medical Center policies, Nursing Services, and Iowa Code Chapter Six. Leadership is provided by cooperating with the health care team and overseeing non-professional personnel.
Day-to-day work focuses on ongoing assessment, formulating individualized age-appropriate plans addressing mental, physical, psycho-social, and cultural needs. Care is implemented using evidenced-based practices, with evaluation of interdisciplinary team effectiveness. Medications are administered, and efficiency is maintained in emergency situations following protocols.
The environment supports patient outcomes through assignment of team members based on needs and capabilities. Participation occurs in orientation, unit goals, performance improvement, and meetings. Commitment to professional growth involves completing unit-specific training and competencies within defined time frames.
Requirements
- Registered Nurse (RN) licensure compliant with Iowa nursing standards
- Knowledge of evidenced-based practices and emergency protocols
- Ability to oversee non-professional nursing personnel
- Compliant with HIPAA and confidentiality standards at all times
- Demonstrates commitment to professional growth and competence
- Completes and maintains unit-specific training and competency monitors with passing scores
- Supports BMC Nursing Services values, mission, vision, and service excellence standards
- Effective problem identification, resolution skills, and use of lines of authority
Responsibilities
- Maintains standards of nursing care and implements Medical Center, Nursing Services, and Iowa Code Chapter Six policies and procedures
- Performs assessment and data collection in an ongoing and systematic manner, focusing on environmental, self-care, education, and discharge factors
- Formulates individualized, goal-directed, age-appropriate plans of care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team
- Implements care in a knowledgeable, skillful, consistent, and continuous manner using evidenced-based practices
- Evaluates the effectiveness of care provided by the interdisciplinary team
- Assigns nursing care team members based on patient needs and staff capabilities and qualifications
- Administers medications and evaluates their effectiveness
- Performs efficiently in emergency situations following established protocols
